"A Handlebar Moustache is indeed a glorious facial hair feature. Whether it stands alone or crowns some other form of facial hair, the glory comes from it being a 'Handlebar' and not simply an ordinary moustache." - Schnauzer

For me it would depend on the organization. MOstof my career has been in non profit and academic environments so almost definitely would not shave for those areas. Going into a for profit setting Imight consider it a bit, though most likely would give things a good trim and be done with it. Another approach would be to find aa good barber/stylist and have them do a good triim. Even as a newbie I realize that is a stretch..someone can shave my head but they are not usually touching the mo. However if it's that or watch it go down the drain....plus an unbiased professional might be able to get things looking real good.

You might visit where you worked before and ask an administrator there what impression it gives. Even so, everyone will have their own reaction.

As for myself, I feel solid curls like mine are sometimes too strong medicine for some people so I would probably do a softer looking moustache. You can get really good shape and control with (here I go again) glue stick and use less that you would for control with wax, yet it could look more open, softer for the interview. A lot of wax can look greasy and that might be a turn off for the professional doing the interviewing.

And apw1970 said he gets more respect from his students with his moustache. lol. Gives them "the look" and they behave better than without it. So you can say it's a asset for a teacher. Maybe schools should require handlebar moustaches on all men teachers?

On top of that, confidence, professionalism, personality and heart will go a long way in an interview.

Looking back on my school days, personality, confidence and heart where what made a teacher good, interesting and respected. I think a handlebar moustache would be the cherry on top!

Thanks for the good advice Eric. A+ !!!

My view is it depends on who you want the interviewers to think you are and what you would like to be remembered for. I had to speak at some high profile conferences last year in the capital and I shaved my tache off as I needed them to not have anything to quibble over and simply to listen to what I said. It was early days in the forum I was speaking and I kind of got thrust into it. Now though I benefit from my handlebar as it is an icebreaker and always gets things going. The trouble is I always have to be more memorable by what I say and do than the image so it does leave a mini challenge.

As many say you need to be completely set in your mind and able to chat about it with confidence. If you have doubts they will probably pick up on that.

From my perspective the view of the people in my meetings generally run like this:
Start - "who is this and what is that!"
End - "what a nice guy, a bit crazy yes, cool moustache yes, but to be honest, on him, it kinda works"

A number of people have confided that their first impression of was different to how they now think about me, but I think that is down to who they are and how you carry it. I can't say I didnt shave when I thought it necessary, but I also have tried to ride the storm more recently. Not sure there is an answer I could give without feeling guilty if it didn't work. Sorry.

Hi apw1970
I seem to have caught that you are a school teacher? I was surplused two months ago from a High School teaching position in Miami, and may have a new opportunity coming up...... will the moustache be a disadvantage in a possible interview?

Here in Duval I have had no issues, but I have not had to interview. Good luck in Miami-Dade!
