...what do you eat for dinner? Now, I am not helpless in the kitchen. In fact, I am mostly in charge of food around here. However, when my wife is not here for dinner, after the kids have gone to bed, I always make bratwurst and sauerkraut - and drink beer, of course It is something that she just doesn't appreciate like I do

Mmmmm - Bratwurst mit Sauerkraut und Bier.
I ate alone just last night. Our eldest was out; studying to upgrade CPR and First Aid in case yours truly chokes on his bratwurst. Mrs S and our youngest were ill and didn't want dinner.
I'm no gourmand. I took a piece of pork from the freezer and made Jägerschnitzel and Spätzle. I usually keep a thick gourmet mushroom soup on hand which I use as sauce for schnitzel and add a small amount of maple syrup and cinnamon to the spätzle. I hadn't bothered with any greens last night but it's usually green peas or beans. Fortunately Mrs S had baked earlier, using my mother's recipe for Pflaumenkuchen. That was my dessert.

Fried chicken. From scratch.

I just kind of invented a slow-cooker reuben today. Being in a rush to get out of the house this morning, and having scant resources, I basically threw turkey (didn't have any corned beef), shredded cheese, cream cheese, a can of sauerkraut, and some 1000 Island into the slow cooker, mixed it all up, and came home 9 hours later with a loaf of seeded marble rye. Turned out pretty fantastic.

A fortnight on, I made Jägerschnitzel and Spätzle again tonight. The only difference being, it was to feed the whole family this time. @harvmb - I use the slow-cooker for making my "bum-burner" chilli, up at our local ski resort. It's a short drive from town but once and sometimes twice a year we rent a place on the mountain with two other families of four, total of twelve adults and children. We alternate the food prep among the families - the Schnauzer family usually do the first night's meal. I prepare the chilli at home the night before and let it marinate in red wine overnight. The next morning we drive up the mountain and all I need to do is plug in the slow-cooker and set it at 'low' heat before we head out the door for skiing. The slow-cooker really takes the pressure off. I can enjoy the day skiing, return for a few ales in the hot-tub and we eat anytime after that.

What glamorous lives you colonials live! There ain't no mountains in Sussex, so we can't ski down 'em, let alone burn our bums on Schnauzer's Chilli.
Well, we're off to The Tollgate Carvery Restaurant in Bramber tomorrow for my partner's birthday lunch. This won't impress the aforementioned chaps from 'over-there', but there's a full buffet starter counter, then a chef-carved mains counter and then a full buffet dessert counter. So we'll stuff ourselves with so much starters that we won't consume too much meat in the middle course, which will please the restaurant management, and then stuff again with 'puddings' (not the semolina kind!) when we realise that we're not that full of meat after all.
Burp... Pardon!
Lovely...
David

I dont tweet about my bowels. I do tweet about non-bodily topics. As for the solitary man food. If I am in a mood, I get to the butcher and go with a 1.5 inch (6 cm) thick cut of cow (porterhouse is the cut of choice). Got to have veg with it. Potato is not a veg to me, but a good rich mashed cauliflower or broccoli and carrots in a butter sauce.
If I am not in a mood, its box mac and cheese with hot dogs! Bon Appetite.

Do you make the sauerkraut yourself? I enjoy bratwuerste frequently, but haven't gone through the trouble of making the 'kraut myself yet.

Sadly no - I wouldn't mind trying my hand at making both the kraut and sausage myself, but since I'm the only one around here who eats the stuff I can't be bothered to make the effort. Still yummy stuff though

Fast Food may be your mind's friend, but it's probably not your body's friend... David
