"A Handlebar Moustache is indeed a glorious facial hair feature. Whether it stands alone or crowns some other form of facial hair, the glory comes from it being a 'Handlebar' and not simply an ordinary moustache." - Schnauzer

Dear whiskered friends,

I've seen lots of waxes being discussed here but have never read much about Skippys. I have just tried it and therefore come back to you with my impressions.

The only other brand of wax I've ever used is Bounders. I always had trouble applying it - I ended up with lots of very unsightly white crumbs in my moustache. I had to wet the moustache first, so that the wax got diluted upon application. This resulted in a fairly stiff feel, but made it very difficult for me to tame my wild hairs, and my moustache was always a bit spiky. That being said, I bought a tube more than a year ago and believe that MrWax changed his formula somewhat recently, so this of course may not apply to the later batches.

I decided to give Skippys a try just because I wanted to, and I wasn't disappointed. It comes in a fairly stylish tin box and smells deliciously - it has a fresh lavender fragrance, with hints of honey, woods and a very slight smoky scent. The smell is very natural and evokes both the fields of Provence and a buzzing hive, and the colour is also very natural-looking, like pure beeswax. The smell lingers throughout the day but in a very discrete, delicate way, which I found very agreeable even though I'm usually stricly against perfumes and scented deodorants or aftershaves.
I found it extremely easy to apply, it's enough to rub it vigorously so that it melts a bit, a hair-dryer is not even needed. Because it contains vaseline it's very easy to work with but nonetheless doesn't feel greasy. Its hold is wonderfully pleasant - stiff enough to shape the moustache, yet very natural-looking. While I found that Bounders tried to tame the wild hair by making them ultra-stiff, Skippys gently persuades them - they are lured by the softness of the vaseline, then trapped by the stiffness of beeswax. The result is a smooth, flowing moustache, which holds its shape if you don't, like me, spend the whole day touching it because you like smooth feel created by the wax.

I've only used it in warmish weather so far, and have not been under heavy rain (I'm in Belgium, so that won't last), but I find it absolutely great and would heartily recommend it.

Cheers!

WW

Thanks for that interesting review! Skippys was one of my first waxes and I always felt I needed to use so much that it left my moustache very greasy. It is a really sticky wax... It really does smell super, though! I guess I will have to give it another go (again) now that my moustache is longer and more easily tamed :stache:

You are right - it does feel a bit greasy, but I find the feeling disappears quickly (a half-hour, perhaps?) after application. I have never tried achieving such a shape as yours, as I prefer a flowing moustache, but perhaps indeed the hold would be a bit soft for your style.
Another thing I like is that you cannot feel it - no stiffness!

Cheers!

I haven't styled my moustache like you see in my avatar for a few months now. I have also joined the ranks of the relaxed and flowing and just use wax to keep the unruly hairs in line give my moustache a little shape :red:

I will give Skippys another try soon and post the results.
