"A Handlebar Moustache is indeed a glorious facial hair feature. Whether it stands alone or crowns some other form of facial hair, the glory comes from it being a 'Handlebar' and not simply an ordinary moustache." - Schnauzer

Firehouse tacky wacky wax. I have tried a couple of soft hair wax type things, but they didn't do anything to be honest so I tried the tacky wacky. It is a bit hit and miss on the results to be honest, but that is entirely me. I need to practice and I'm sure with growth and practice I'll get a bit more consistent.

I agree on the soul patch. I also feel a bit more liberated without it for some reason. Hope you find something that works.

I also found wacky tacky the best so far- so I'm hopefully on the right path.
With my previous moustache I hung on to a soul patch and at the moment I am keeping a trimmed beard- it's funny how a few extra hairs can feel like support! Hoping to go moustache solo soon! Keep us updated on progress.

Kind Regards
Matt

Hello the name's Alex. I'm 24 years old and currently reside in the States, Texas to be more specific. I've had a closely cropped beard for a couple years now but have just recently let my flavor savor gain some length. Probably ~3-4 months of no trimming and it's coming along nicely. I'm looking forward to gaining some knowledge from some of the more experienced moustachiod gentlemen on the site, as well as shooting the breeze with some like minded folks.

Alex

Welcome to the group Alex. What a delightful congregation of beards and moustaches you will find here.
Enjoy!

Jim

Hello, I wish to inquire about on how to grown a Handlebar. I already have a mustache but I find it difficult to twirl at the ends, that and there a few short straw hairs at the ends. Should I shave my mustache completely and allow for proper growth and grooming, or should I simply let it grow and work with it?

Welcome L3ftyrighty!
I think everyone here will tell you that the best way to grow a moustache out is not to trim it! As you already have a moustache, that's half the battle, so all you need to do now is what you suggested yourself, which is to wait for the ends to grow and work with what you get.

I'm sure if you were to post a picture of your progress so far, the Forum members will advise you on what results to expect and how long it might take. Have a look at the Let's see your Moustache... thread.

Please would you also put your location into your profile so that we know what part of the world you are from.

David

Hello Gent's!

I have been lurking around for the past little bit, and thought it finally time to chime in......
I have been wanting to grow a handle bar for a few years now, and am still not quite there yet. This is what I'm working with, so far. Now where do I go......longer, wider, which way for either, trim it? I'm lost! Everytime I've tried to grow it, it just seems to get out of control, and then I give up. My job requires that I an neatly groomed & presentable ~ should I start this while on holidays?

I've have sported a 'stache for the past 25 years & have never had handlebars.
I've admired them, and envied the guys who have had them. As I get familiar in these parts, I will be picking everyone's expertise is finally having my own set.
I've gone so far as to buy some wax, and now I just need some tutoring on the rest.

Cheers,

Hello there and welcome! You have a wonderful starting point for a superb handlebar moustache. There are two pieces of advice I can give you:

1: No trimming - not the middle, not the sides, nowhere :notrim
2. Read the advice in old threads here with regard to training and grooming.

What wax did you buy?

great to hear about the starting point & thank you for the tips. I purchased a "Tacky Firehouse Wax" .... while researching on the internet, that was a name that kept popping up over and over again. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Tim

Yeah, don't worry about out of control. Try waxes and glues (see articles here and on my blog handlebarmoustachelife.com linked below), and be patient. It will be awesome and fun.

Another "rule" of mine: Never cut your moustache until you hate it for two weeks straight. The mood usually passes, and the complements will come.

My first one was 6 months before anything recognizable. I also used a pomade as a "conditioner." Murry's with aussie beeswax. Find it in the ethnic haircare isle.

:notrim :notrim :notrim :notrim :notrim will get you to :magyar or :english or even :tophat: and :dali because doing nothing is doing something. Keep calm, grow a moustache!

trimmed mine yesterday and tweaked it today. i don't like the middle hairs in my mouth. looks sloppy. and all it does it makes it neater in appearance...i still am growing it all from a quarter in from both corners...just the middle is trimmed. ala bill the butcher.

I appreciate the issue of not liking the middle hairs going into the mouth, it is a fact that every handlebar cultivator will go through this phase. However, if these whiskers are left to grow in the fullness of time they can be trained by repeated brushing, combing and perhaps a hint of wax to grow away from the lips and toward the corners of the mouth.

Ya, I just dont like em! I like the brushed down look for the middle anyways, and then let them grow long everywhere else....who knows, maybe after i have the length i want, ill let the rest catch up. this way, at least its neater in appearance.
