"A Handlebar Moustache is indeed a glorious facial hair feature. Whether it stands alone or crowns some other form of facial hair, the glory comes from it being a 'Handlebar' and not simply an ordinary moustache." - Schnauzer

I decided I wanted to try and fill out my moustache a bit. Hoping to get something more in the Hungarian or wild west style. I didn't want to shave of the 'tache and start from scratch again. I also thought it would look a little ridiculous trying to grow a larger moustache around a smaller existing handlebar. So I decided I'd grow a beard around the 'tache.

So I'm right about 3 months with the beard, thinking I'll give it another month or two. But the time will come when I strip back down to a moustache. Question is... how the heck do you tell where to cut it in? In the past I've gone with a strict 'not beyond the corners of the mouth' rule. I don't care about that anymore. Just wanting a nice full stache.

Any suggestions on how to "draw the line"?

The lines are already drawn. I suggest you cut in at the smile lines.

Start wide, go side to side with the trimmers, and when you're content, stop. The problem with using the smile lines as a firm guide is that if you have a small mouth, you will have narrow smile lines, and you may want a wider mustache.

Cheers,

Bob

M'Bob makes a good point. By crossing over the smile line and including hair from the cheeks you can add volume and length, as beard hair has a longer terminal length than hair grown solely on the upper lip.

My thinking is anything outside the smile lines isn't really moustache hair but ventures into cheek hair and beard territory, like a burnsides or imperial beard-ish growing area. I like the hungarian rule also, which allows about a half inch below the corners of the mouth. And it's your face. Do what you like.
