Some guys go all out and theme it up when they participate in a moustache contest. I think that can help, and can certainly be fun. When I was in the Moustachio Bashio last Fall at the Silverton Casino there was only one man with a get up and it was sort of a sea captain in pink jacket and white pants and a captain's hat. He had a nice moustache and small goatee musketeer style, and won second place, first went to a man with a fancy beard (moustache was fairly good) but in street clothes, third to a portly older man with a long, stringy moustache in shirt and jeans.

I'm planning to compete there this year and wondering what if anything I might do to dress it up. Going for a long hungarian/western style. Maybe a nice vest and a duster-like coat. My hair will be about ten inches long by then, wavy salt and mostly pepper, so maybe a hat would sadly hide that glory. I don't want to overdo it, just draw a bit more attention. And win $1000. Any suggestions?

Well, I have no experience in this matter, but I feel that these competitions celebrate and reward "overdoing it" by their nature. If you are going for a Western style stache, I would say dress like a cowboy - not a modern version, but find some attire that looks authentic. Don't be afraid to cover your hair with a hat - you wouldn't want your lovely locks to detract from your moustache, would you? Besides, if you have a hat as part of your costume, you can always use it as a prop - tip it to the ladies, etc.

Hi all,

Next weekend on November 19 will be the second annual Mustachio Bashio at the Silverton Casino here in Las Vegas. The grand prize is 1000.00. There will be a moustache contest that I will be entering. I would like to solicit your suggestions for attire, costume, hair and such.

Last year I heard about it that very afternoon at work and just went in my black jeans, plaid shirt and leather bomber jacket. I would like to do better and catch more attention this year.

I don't know that my stach is as magnificent as some I have seen, but I can't see it with objective eyes, so maybe it's awesome enough. Regardless, I want to dress up a bit. For Halloween last year I dressed as an old time bistro waiter with a long, white apron and my (then shorter) hair slicked down and a tray full of "scary" Halloween props.

I could do this for the contest, with different things on the antique style tray, maybe a different vest. My hair is a year longer and I can tie it in 3 inch pony tail. Not sure what to do. I could slick it down and tie it back, or gel it and let it hang limp down the sides. Or I could do an entirely different outfit and let my hair hang naturally (It's wavy and shoulder length.)

My mo has a natural curl that forms a ring about an inch across if I wax or glue it. I could go glued/waxed, or dry and natural.

Any suggestions?

Here's a shot of my hair let out with no styling product:

I think the waiter's outfit is great - certainly original. It's just a shame you can't turn up with the coffin as well!

The most important thing is probably to ensure that your 'tache is styled perfectly - then you can adjust your hair to suit whatever you are wearing. If you're going to slick it back it's also got to look good - so maybe leave it loose?

Make sure you post some pictures on here and let us know how you get on.

Best, Philip

May we assume you have already perused the galleries from past WBMC and nothing has leapt off the screen and screamed "that's it, that's me!"

hit a thrift store (unless you own one or have a friend who has one) and buy a baseball outfit and go as Rollie Fingers. You're stashe almost looks exactly like his and you can go as either a Padre or A. And you won't even have to spend any time on your hair. If they don't get it, make sure you autograph a ball or two and pass them to the judges with a "You're welcome, anyone else like an autograph?"

Good idea.

IMHO EricJT's 'tache is far more substantial than the one shown in the accompanying image, and should be used to its greatest advantage. How about modfiying the waiter costume to an Old West gambler - or, do you anticipate too many of those in Las Vegas?

I like that idea - unless you saw that used last year, it sounds like it could be a big hit in Vegas
