Hi folks

Starting a separate thread - hope that's okay! (@admin?)

I have tried find moustache wax in India, but I haven't really found any here - most reccos are to use coconut oil (or some such oil) and try and style it. I have tried but haven't really found this effective. It kinda stays like this :brimley: (in black) and I'd rather have it like this : :tophat:

And a friend's now in the states, so looking for some recco as to what wax to ask them to bring along?
I have thinnish black hair and the wax needs to be kiss-friendly (browsing thru the forum for tips on *that*).

Would prefer to have a list of 2-3 wax brands to try out and then see how it goes.

Also, What would you recommend as standard way of maintenance - I currently just style it with the hands - dont really find them long enough to comb thru.

cheers!

It really depends on the type of wax you're looking for/need.
I find most wax to be too soft to hold my stache in place, so I use extra firm wax like bounder or wacky tacky.

I own the following:
Man's Face Stuff (scented wax)
Firehouse Wacky Tacky
Bounder
Captain Fawcett

I always have a tin of bounder with me (It's small and easy to carry) for touch ups.
Normally I use wacky tacky or mansfacestuff to give shape and bounder to keep it In place. (more with mansfacestuff than WT)

I got captain fawcett just yesterday so i still don't have a strong opinion on it.

Welcome to the forum!
A good shampoo and conditioner are important and give you a good clean volumous (and good smelling) base to start with.
I start with Head and Shoulders Shampoo then use Aussie 'Take the Heat' conditioner. It has a fresh minty smell which I'm sure whoever is kissing you would appreciate.
I then pat dry with a towel and brush into a 'walrus style' with a moustache comb.
I then use a combination of waxes and shape with my fingers and sometimes a hairdryer.
In the centre/bar/pringle, I use Foad's 'Toad Satin Wax' as I'm not a fan of the slicked down look and find that this product gives shape and hold without the visible wax look. I received a free tester pot from Mr Foad with my order of Foad Wax and it's been the main one I've used daily for the past month. It also has the kissability factor as it smells like lemon cheesecake.
For the tips, I'm a 'Bounder man'. Excellent strong hold and it smells of vanilla and Rum (but not like you're perpetually drunk).
Use the internet, read some reviews of the various waxes out there, and perhaps order 3-4 pots of wax (off the internet) from ones that have a weak hold to ones that have a stong hold to experiment a little to see what works with your hair type/length and climate. The only wax I've ever seen in the shop is Clubman's which seems to get mixed reviews. It's not an exact science and takes some trial and error to get right and you'll find you'll need to continually adapt your technique as the hair grows.
The more effort and time you put in, the better results you get out!
I gleaned all of the above from this fine forum and Eric's handlebar moustache life blog and it works for me.
Now let's see a pic of what you're working with and make sure you report back with your findings.
Regards
7VEN

Oregon Wild Hair has a good "medium hold." Here is a recent pic.

So if that is the style you are going for, may I recommend Oregon Wild Hair.Image

For a stiffer hold, I recommend either Firehouse Wacky Tacky or Dark.Image Also you cannot go wrong with glue stick.

I have also been know to go whole weekends with this stuff holding firm!

@hezi: Thanks much, thats a helpuful review! Now browsing through the websites!

Thank you 7ven. especially the part about using differing waxes for center and the tips - will try it out. Will definitely post pictures soon as I start using them! :)

Thanks Kellum. Especially for the pictorial illustration, I'd definitely want firmer hold, and would try what you've recco'd!

Cheers!

I find that Man's Face Stuff has a pretty decent hold and it smells nice too. Check my review in the reviews section.

First of all a very warm welcome to you!!!

Your quote about coconut-oil reminded me of the days when I was playing cricket. We had two guys from India in our team with huge handlebar-moustaches (great batsmen & very fast bowlers  ). In those days I was far away from growing any kind of beard or moustache by myself but I always was very interested how they kept their moustaches "in shape". And surprisingly they told me the same as you mentioned here, they used to use coconut-oil only...

I once tried that too, but it didn't work for me. Maybe it all depends on the thickness of my hair?

However I use coconut-oil sometimes before going to bed, because it makes my stache very soft and it seems to tame wild ends overnight. And my wife loves the smell

Cheers,

Peter
