"A Handlebar Moustache is indeed a glorious facial hair feature. Whether it stands alone or crowns some other form of facial hair, the glory comes from it being a 'Handlebar' and not simply an ordinary moustache." - Schnauzer

This question is directed to the competitors. I had read on another Blog that competitors were encouraged to show up with everything fully grown, then trim and style to suit the category you were placed in. Did any of you follow that strategy? Please share your wisdom or hindsight with us.

A couple of weeks back, I trimmed off some of the outer hairs, so that I'd be able to qualify for the Imperial category. Although I lost a bit of the volume, it did end up looking a bit better defined, so I guess it was a worthwhile exercise.

I didn't go anywhere near a pair of scissors on the day. I was having enough problems as it was (it was definately a 'catfish' sort of day...) and that would have been asking for disaster. As for styling - I just went through my usual 'best effort' routine.

I didn't trim at all. But then my tache is only 4 months old so I can't afford to lose any length. Particularly as my eventual aim is, hopefully, to sport an Hungarian/Wild West moustache a la Bruce Roe. Whether I can ever reach that is debatable but I'm going to give it a go. I'd like to compete in the Wild West category in Alaska 2009.

On the Thursday before WBMC 2007 I was entering the Imperial, by Friday, I think I was sporting an English and on getting home that evening experimented with a very tight Dali which believe it or not was poking me in the eye. I slept on my back looking very much like a 3 day old corpse. Got up in the morning, washed out the wax, ran a comb through and duly changed my entry to Moustache Natural!!

So, no trimming whatsoever.

I have not witnessed that at the WBMC 2007. Thank god. It would have been an abuse.

In Brighton competitors had to choose themselvves the category they wanted to enter before facing a small pre-jury (in order to avoid false interpretations of stricly defined categories or to prevent people from entering a category for which they did not meet the requirements according to their 'taches). Of course competitors had to show up with their 'taches prepared in the aimed category for pre-judgement.

Nobody came with an unprepared 'tache waiting to be told what category to enter or how to trim or style the 'tache.

I did not trim at all that day. I entered the Imperial category as I was prepared to weeks in advance and just made the best I could out of my 'tache, styled it how I wanted without the slightest indication from the pre-jury.

I was then my own master.
