Hi everyone, first post. I have always had a goatee for the past 15 years. Then like many others, Movember came around and about half way through November, I saw pics from the movie Gangs of New York of Bill the butcher.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lNB032NZtzU/T ... 2-31-g.jpg

I loved the look, and having never had JUST a mustache, decided to try and grow it in that style.

I'm one month in now and if you look at pics of his mustache in that movie, you can see he has the hair on top of the lip all one length touching his bottom lip, and then its grown long outside the mouths width to form the curl.

I think I'd prefer that look, over growing the ENTIRE mustache (in the centre) to avoid all the problems of eating etc.

Any comments on that?

Also, to do this stache, where should I let the hairs grow from (meaning where should I use a comb to seperate growing hairs from ones I trim)

Thanks!!!

or a longer version of it (i think) is this?:

Is this style as well where you'd trim the middle of the lip and let the outer areas grow?

Be aware that in the gangs pic that may be the actor's natural shape without trimming. Re eating, you will adapt to the moustache as it grows out. Don't worry about it. After a while you won't notice the hairs on your lips or in your mouth either, and it also depends on how you wax or glue your stache.

Firstly, just don't trim it at all. Let it grow out completely to see what it will do. The hairs in the middle, which I call the "pringle" will grow to whatever length your genes will allow. (Mine grow to between .5 and 1.5 inches long. I used to think they would just keep growing, but no, they stop.) This will give your moustache a natural shape, which in my opinion always looks better. If you trim any of them it will likely give an odd shape to the moustache. These hairs will only grow so long, while the hairs toward and past the corners of the mouth will be longer naturally and form your curls - or however you shape them. Mine are naturally very curly and it can be a challenge to open up the curl or make an English style for me. Other guys have a larger curl or straight hair and have to make them curl with glue or wax. Yours will do what they will do and you will have varying degrees of control over the look. It will be fine however it turns out. And you will be more likely to merely part the middle rather than trim it. I don't recommend trimming as you will have short hairs you can't control. Give it time and see what it will do for you. DON'T TRIM.

Thx for the reply. You make a good case. I guess I don't know for sure what I want. I lean towards a brushed down look as opposed to a sideways part. And that's where I think then it may as well be not in my mouth towards the centre. I'll let it go for a bit and see.

Thx for taking the time.

Hey Butcher, welcome!! You can always comb/brush your center hairs down, and at the bottom, wax over to the sides, as this will make your stache appear fuller and bigger. It's kinda hard to explain, but that's what I do. Eric is right about getting used to everything, you actually do, and it becomes a natural tolerance. I'm always moving my hairs around, lol. I as well love Bill the Butcher's stache in that movie, he wears it well. I think everyone looks different with these stache's, some guys look great with them, and in my opinion, some guys don't. I still love the stache, but on some, it's just not them. It's like if everyone slicked their hair back, well, this may look like a good hairstyle on some, but not others. Or they could just have no hair, like me :).

Anyway, look forward to seeing the "Man cleavage," lol. Happy growing!!
